A historic achievement for the Lancaster team.

Last night marked a historic achievement for Lancasters Women’s Rugby, winning the prestigious British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Club of the Year award. This award is a first in the club’s history, marked more so by the centenary celebrations of British university sport.

The BUCS is the national governing body for Higher Education sport in the UK, who aim to create ‘the best university sport experience in the world’ by promoting ‘the lifestyle and educational benefits to communities and individuals of taking part in sport, and provide outstanding opportunities to all students to engage in sport’.

The awards, held at the University of the West of England (UWE), gathered BUCS institutions and members, from student athletes to their staff and volunteers, to announce the winners of 11 different categories. The competition was already steep, with 125 nominations submitted overall.

Other shortlisted teams included Oxford University Basketball Club, University College London Women’s Hockey Team and Lancaster’s Women’s Rugby Union Team. BUCS stated that the Club of the Year award ‘seeks to recognise a club that has demonstrated a commitment to development areas of their club, resulting in increased participation, inclusion and diversity within its membership’. In this spirit, the Rugby girls teamed up with Green Lancaster this year to work with local primary schools to encourage healthy eating and sporting activity, demonstrating their commitment to the wider community as well as their sport.

Congratulations to the team!
