Clubs and societies excel at Freshers Fair

This year’s Intro Week had plenty on offer for students, including a chance to check out the extensive range of extracurricular activities available at Lancaster University.

On the Wednesday, the Activities Showcase descended on Alexandra Square, where over 30 different clubs and societies demonstrated their skills. Eleanor Cootes, Activities Intern with LUSU, described the showcase as “fantastic, despite the weather […] it was a great event to have the day before the Clubs & Societies Freshers’ Fair, and I’m sure it was part of the reason that we saw a big increase in people signing up to groups on the Thursday.”

Marc Handley, LUSU Vice President (Activities) also felt that the clubs and societies fair held on the Thursday of Freshers’ Week was a great success. “The number of groups grow year on year, it’s amazing that we get so many people who want to participate and show their skills to as many people as they can” he said.

The University Squash Society was especially satisfied with the results of Freshers’ Fair. Joe Reed, Squash President told SCAN that he thought that “the Freshers’ Fair was fantastic and really well organised” particularly as “squash had over 100 new members sign up!”

The crowds who attended the fairs were entertained in the queue by Sugarhouse with Lou Davies, Sugarhouse Manager, working as the DJ for the fair and the Sugarhouse staff marking the students with “love Lancaster” tattoos.

Both Freshers’ fairs were deemed “huge successes” by Cootes, going on to say that “our clubs and societies have had a really strong start to the year with their involvement in Intro Week, which we hope will continue with lots of great events to come.”
