Lancaster University’s Men’s BUCS Squash team have won this years BUCS Cup with a 3 – 2 victory over arch rivals York University. The five match thriller on Wednesday of Week 10 clinched “the most successful season ever” for the club.

The team, captained by Rob Gibson, saw the contest go right down to the wire with Gibson saving 4 match points before going on to win his match 3 – 2 to secure the title. Lancaster University’s Women’s BUCS team also came in as valiant runners-up in their clash against Durham University, having already secured the BUCS 2a league title the week previous.

The teams, captained by Rob Gibson and Katie Shearston, have put their team’s successes down to the “extra commitment” shown by the entire squad this year.

Talking to Loui Quelcutti, the Squash Club’s President, SCAN was informed that this season’s achievements the had to be put down to the “extra time the Captains are putting in to more training sessions.” Quelcutti went on to add that he expected the club to be “collecting a few trophies come the Sunday of Roses” this year.

When asked about the future of the club, Quelcutti said, “I’m very confident that both teams will be just as successful next year. With only two members of the whole club graduating, even without an influx of freshers we’ll retain the team’s core and hopefully maintain the levels of enthusiasm throughout the club.”

With the entire squad showing renewed promise, Lancaster Squash Club will certainly be in high spirits ahead of the 50th Annual Roses against York, to be held during Week 2 of summer term.
