The Investment and Finance Society are continuing the success of their fellow LUMS societies in providing great speakers this term. The City Careers Weekend Conference will see alumni coming to Lancaster to give presentations on investment banking, women in finance and alternative investments. The speakers include employees of firms such as Deutsche Bank, Bank of America Merril Lynch, J.P. Morgan and others. To start the weekend, Mark Branson, Lancaster alumnus and CEO of FINMA, will give a talk at LUMS on Friday Week 4. FINMA is the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority, the government body responsible for financial regulation in Switzerland.
Branson studied Mathematics and Management Studies at Trinity College, Cambridge, before completing a Masters in Operational Research at Lancs. Having spent time at several financial institutions, including Credit Suisse, Branson’s career grew to include a time as CEO of UBS Securities Japan Ltd, where was responsible for “investment banking, securities activities, asset management and wealth management in Japan”. Branson joined FINMA in 2010, going on to be appointed to the position of Deputy CEO in February 2013, before becoming CEO on April 1 2014. Branson will give insights into his career and current role.
The event will take place in Lecture Theatre 3 in the Management School on Friday Week 4, beginning at 5pm. The Head of the Accounting and Finance Department, Professor Young, and the founder of the Lancaster University Investment and Finance Society, Daniel Schaaf, will introduce the event.
