OKGo have brought out their 3rd studio album entitled, Of the blue colour of the Sky which came out on the 12th January through Capitol Records and after the first listen it can only be agreeable that they deserve credit for their style and imaginative innovation.
They’re a alt rock/power pop band originally from Chicago and span the music genres, this album is a great example of that creativity and variety, the album’s title, concept and lyrics were inspired by a book entitled, The Influence of the Blue Ray of the Sunlight and of the Blue Colour of the Sky, a pseudoscientific book published in 1876. They wanted this album to be removed from their previous pop rock sound and they certainly deliver. The album sounds like an experiment travelling across 13 tracks, the album’s first track entitled, ‘WTF?’ which is a great intro track, not one to dance to as such but delivers the concept of the album accurately.
‘While you were asleep’ is a beautiful ballad which on listening put me in a very peaceful state of mind and I wanted to fall asleep! Some of the other album highlights are the funky ‘I want you so bad I can’t breathe’, ‘Before the earth was round’ which reminds me a little of Daft Punk, ‘Skyscrapers’ and ‘Back from Kathmandu’ which was the 3rd single off the album and came out earlier this year. Overall the whole album is fantastic from start to finish offering something a little different that’s bound to please all.
On their official website front man Damien Kulash is quoted saying, “We’re trying to be a DIY band in a post-major label world” and on listening to the album I can see why he said it, OK Go are not just the band who did that video with the treadmills for ‘Here it goes again’ they are a creative and musical force who just keep going.
