More Acts Announced for Kendal Calling 2010: It’s Time to Get Kaylied…
Alongside its coupling with the legendary Manchester venue Band on the Wall, this year the Kaylied Stage will stay open till 3am providing music and entertainment centred on a love for tradition. Friday night headliners are First Aid Kit – a Swedish sister folk duo – fresh from their world tour who will provide the entwinement of stories and music.
The big name for Saturday has to be Mark Chadwick of The Levellers. One of the UK’s most-loved and renowned folk bands – I saw these back in the late 80s and fell in love with them – The Levellers have an impressive back catalogue and, although it is only their singer and lead guitarist performing, expect this to be heavily drawn on. The music should sit quite nicely within the green and socialist side of Kendal Calling as the justice, green and anti-capitalist issues have featured heavily throughout the band’s career.
First Aid Kit have a Fleet Foxes style of storytelling about them and will get support from the Tom Waits mentored singer-songwriter Jesca Hoop. Like your blues? Then Skip McDonald and John Smith are for you. Fancy some frenzied dancefloor Ska action? Baked A la Ska –yes, it is a very cool name – will whip up some stomping music. I’ve seen them once before and they ARE good.
Also announced are The Unabombers with their brand of basement soul, Matthew Halsall, Lazybones, Tankus the Henge, Jonathan Jeremiah and The See See.
Add to all this lot the likes of experimental electronic from Denis Jones, Kirsty Almeida – whom the Guardian labelled “Florence without the machine” – and Michael Kiwanuka – a favourite of Radio One’s Huw Stephens – and it looks like being another year of top notch eclectic entertainment in the Kaylied arena…
