Lancaster University’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender society, YOURlgbtq*, are making a short film inspired by a campaign in Australia.
‘GetUp!’ deals with numerous issues in Australia and released a video late last year, named “It’s Time”, promoting marriage equality for homosexuals. Lancaster’s YOURlgbtq* will be focusing on a wider theme for their film, promoting equality of love irrespective of gender.
The project will be filmed in and around the University with the assistance of LUSU and the Independent Film Society. The finished film will hopefully be submitted to the National Union of Students (NUS) for the 2011/2012 NUS Student Films Awards.
YOURlgbtq*’s Open Campaigns and Welfare Officer, Annabelle Blackburn, is thoroughly impressed with the project. “I was one of the first people to consider the project back in Michaelmas” she told SCAN, describing how “the original “It’s Time” video was posted on [their] Facebook wall and created quite an emotive response.”
Annabelle was elected as YOURlgbtq*’s Open Campaigns and Welfare Officer early this term and was determined to make Lancaster’s response to the campaign happen. She also explained why their film’s focus is on equal love as opposed to the original video’s focus on same-sex marriage: “The main difference is that we did not want to make a campaign for marriage with university students. Although the issue is dear to me, we felt it would be more appropriate to advocate equal love and equal rights with people of our age group.”
Laura Kay, the society’s Publicity Officer, is keen to advertise this project as much as possible, “we believe this project is really important, and essentially want to try and get as much exposure for it as possible.”
