Winter trend style guide

1.       Tartan

To avoid looking like a northern farmer, the key is to just commit. We have a mutual love for Zara who have a great range of tartan leg wear that varies from the bold to the more subdued tones. Tailored trousers in muted greens and blues can be teamed with simple tees and camisole vests, fitted jeans and leggings can be honed with your staple chunky knit.

Hannah wears her Zara trousers with a grey cable knit and shearling-lined denim jacket.  Chelsea wears hers with high-waisted check jeans with a cropped white mohair knit and grunge boots.

Those who cannot fully commit, or for the more casual student style of black skinnies-white tee combo and the go-to leather jacket, sign up for your UNiDAYS discount on Urban Outfitters to receive 20% discount off your new tartan scarf. This scarf, whilst entirely Lancaster-appropriate, will nail this trend, transforming an otherwise everyday outfit.

2.       Fur

When fur is mentioned, images of a Cruella de Vil crop up everywhere. However, this controversial trend for AW 13 has been toned-down, dissociating itself from the orthodox mink coat, instead embracing the use of fur as a luxe accessory. Rather than channelling  a sodden bit of a road kill,  embrace the winter days in some modern fur pieces.

Hannah wears her fur around her neck in the form of a fur collar which completes her oversized tweed coat. Fur collars can be found in pretty much every high street shop, but the collection in Topshop cater for everyone’s style as they range from the conventional winter colour palette of oxbloods and deep greens to the refreshing new pastels which have been reinvented this season.

3.       All black everything

Our guide to All-Black-Everything means playing with texture and awesome details. So this is our individual take on this trend; head-to-toe. Keep it chic like Coco Chanel in an LBD with some statement jewels to finish the look.

What We Wear:

Hair

Chelsea: Add femininity by tightly curling hair, letting it cool before brushing out and backcombing.

Hannah: Apply salt spray to blow- dried hair to create that tousled effect.

Make-up

Chelsea & Hannah: Dewy foundation, kick-ass brows, subtle eyes, and a red-wine stain lip.

Torso

Chelsea: Silk camisole top with lace edging. Topshop have this bossed.

Hannah: A black oversized shirt which Zara have mastered, but the trick to create the oversized look is simply to buy in a bigger size. Slouchy shirts are bang on trend for AW 13.

Bottoms

Chelsea: Admittedly I am a disco pant wearer, not even ashamed, so I would usually rock these or leather-look jeans.

Hannah: My go-to piece is the standard A-line leather skirt which never disappoints and I would accessorise this with a black chunky belt with a silver buckle.

Feet

Chelsea: Vagabond boots with metallic silver socks popping out at the ankle.

Hannah: Black office ankle boots with silver buckles and black frilly socks, making this outfit look at least a tiny bit feminine.

Accessories

Chelsea: Vintage cassio silver watch (man’s obviously) and heavy silver chain.

Hannah: A maximum of two silver embellished statement rings and a silver multi-layered grunge-esque necklace.
