A HGV fire has caused all three lanes of the M6 motorway to be closed near to Lancaster University.
Fire fighters from Lancashire fire and rescue service are currently at the scene tackling the lorry blaze which is located on a Southbound section of M6 between J33 and J34. The fire can be seen from County College, behind the woodland trail, where smoke is billowing onto campus.
Three explosions were heard by students across campus and County student Connor Pearson says “we asked a witness who believes it was the tyres blowing up”.
Lancashire fire and rescue service requested that all three lanes be closed on the Southbound carriage at 11.09am in order for the fire to be dealt with safely.
At 10.58am, the NW Motorway Police Tweeted: “Reports of a HGV on fire southbound M6 between J34-33. Highways and Police en route.”
A press statement from Lancashire fire and rescue confirmed the full closure and said: “they started to tackle the blaze using four firefighters in breathing apparatus and two hose reels.
“By 11.30, another three fire engines from Carnforth, Morecambe and Garstang were mobilised to the scene and firefighters remain at the scene.”
According to the Lancaster Guardian, a spokesman for the Lancashire fire and rescue service said that the condition of the driver is currently unknown.
The contents of the lorry has yet to be confirmed but a tweet from NW Motorway Police at 11.51 jokingly said: “Think the load of shortbread in the HGV on fire is a tad over cooked.”
