Lancaster 0 – 9 York

A real day to forget for those wearing red on this occasion. Plenty of fans were up early and ready to watch this game in the morning sun but this wasn’t enough to carry the Lancaster girls to victory – the York team winning 9-0.

A tight start between the sides was shattered by a well worked goal for York, a cross from the right-hand side of the pitch allowed a poached finish at the back post. Lancaster looked to be fighting back well when the ball ended up in the York net, but the ball hadn’t received a touch within the ‘D’ so the goal was not allowed; conceding in the following play to this really took the wind out of the Lancastrian sails, and perked up the heads of York. The right side of the York team worked tirelessly to press the ball high up the field time and time again, leading to the ball being given away countless times and starving the Lancaster attackers of anything to feed off. York’s attackers proved clinical in nature, scoring almost every time they came forward for a large period of the latter quarters of the game – proving almost impossible for the commentators to keep up with, let alone the Lancaster defence.

Special commendation must go to Lancaster’s goalkeeper in this game, Katie ‘Slim Shady’ Collins, who – despite the score line – had a tremendous game, of which she should be proud, making countless saves to deny York clear opportunities to extend their lead further. She really embodied the Roses spirit during this game.
