Lancaster 64 – 65 York
After a disappointing performance in York last year Lancaster were looking to re-establish the status quo in the women’s cricket at Westgate Cricket Club. A much improved batting performance left Lancaster with a respectable, if not world beating, innings of 64 for 7 off 30 overs. Securing the 4 points would still be an uphill struggle, however, with a flawless afternoon of fielding and a York batting collapse the only hope of victory. Sadly, neither was the case. York’s opening batters scored 65 for 0 to retain the Roses trophy before drinks at 15 overs. Once again, York fast bowler Robbie proved to be a thorn in Lancaster’s side. A stellar performance with the ball limited Lancaster’s attack to ‘sneaky singles’ with her bowling leaving a lasting impression in the form of bruises on several batters. Whilst disappointed with the result, given the inexperience of the Lancaster team and the improvement on last year’s performance, there is considerable optimism amongst the squad for the remainder of the BUCS season. One particular highlight for the Lancaster fans was President Lois Toole, in her final Roses appearance, posting a career batting high of 11no including a rare, but worth the wait, boundary.
