The Beauty Files: Anna Mather

So, tell us about your holy grails…

There are only a few things I couldn’t live without, the type I wouldn’t swap for a dupe if in need. Firstly, Estee Lauder’s Double-Wear Foundation – ever since it was recommended to me, I’ve never not bought it. There’s no foundation quite like it. Second would be No.7’s Full 360 Mascara. I buy it in brown/black, because it works wonders on my eyebrows too. I simply put the tiniest amount on my Benefit Gimme Brow brush and comb it through. Lastly, Giorgio Armani’s Si fragrance is hands-down my favourite. Whether you think it’s basic, overrated, or too expensive, it will always be my staple scent. The recent red version is gorgeous too.

You are heading to a desert island and can only pack 5 cosmetics: go!

Toothpaste, because let’s not be gross. Mascara, because I do not feel at all together if I’m not wearing it. Lip balm (notably Forever’s Aloe Lips), because I don’t know about you but my lips suffer in all kinds of weather. Deodorant, because again, let’s not be gross. Then finally it would have to be an aloe vera-based moisturiser because one, it would stop dry skin, and two, help with that sunburn I am bound to get!

Skincare routines are so popular these days, tell us about yours.

So, I only use Aloe Vera on my skin, dating back to 2015 when I became a brand ambassador for Forever Living Products. Before anything goes on my face, I drink 120ml of Forever’s Aloe Vera Gel which kicks my whole system into gear, and has had a super-beneficial effect on my skin. Then I get to washing my face with Forever’s Hand Soap; gentle enough for use on the face. After this, I apply their Balancing Toner to remove any excess dirt or makeup left from the day before. I go on to apply some Aloe Vera Gelly to my blemishes, Eye Cream, and then finish with the Sonya Nourishing Serum. All this before putting makeup on ensures skin protection and an overall glow.

Got any beauty hacks?

I have a preference for using highlighters, particularly Sleek’s, for eyeshadow. I also mix Forever’s Sonya Illuminating Gel with my Estee Lauder Double-Wear Foundation; a trick that I swear by. The gel keeps my makeup in place, as well as giving it an illuminating lift. Plus, by mixing a little of each product, I run out of both in less time.

Any products you wouldn’t recommend?

Maybe it’s just me but I don’t get the hype over makeup brushes.

This or That?

Full Glam or Natural? Natural. There’s something freeing about nothing on your skin, and a natural look feels fresher than all glam.

Moisturiser or Primer? Moisturiser, I wouldn’t be without it. I’ll never forget my mum saying, “If you wear anything on your skin, make sure you always moisturise”.

Foundation or Concealer? Foundation.

Eyeliner or Mascara? Really? Mascara.

Bronzer or Highlighter? I was definitely for bronzer back in the day, but I would have to go with highlighter now.

Lipstick or Lipgloss? Lipstick. I refuse to leave the house without my Dior lipstick both on and in my handbag.

Who is your biggest beauty influence?

She is more of a fashion/lifestyle blogger, but Chloe Plumstead (@chloeplumstead). I envy her skin so much; she’s always got this natural glow. Also, is it weird to be in love with someone’s hair?

Hands up my fellow nail-biters 🙋‍♀️ When I’m anxious, when I’m bored, when I’m absent-mindedly picking whilst waiting for the kettle to boil: it’s one of my worst habits. I’ve tried to to quit time and time again, but I come from a long line of nail-nibblers and this kind of low-level frenzy is hard-wired into my DNA. The nail varnish which tastes like shit doesn’t work for me; I just won’t apply it, because I’m a petulant child 😂. The only thing that has ever stopped me are long, inky, stiletto acrylic nails, the ~ least ~ practical of all preventions. I’ve resigned myself to a life of cocktail sausage stumps now, though. I’ll leave the elegant hand business to everybody else 🤷‍♀️

Got your eye on anything special?

Not necessarily, I tend to stick to what I know works for my skin. But I’m always here for a new Naked Palette. And, to be honest, I would love to try out the new Clinique iD customable system; it’s an incredibly innovative product.
