Mia Scott has been elected as VP(Welfare and Community) after close voting that went to a second round.
Scott received a plurality of votes in the first round but not an overall majority. After Re-open Nominations and Harvey Snape were eliminated, Scott received 959 votes compared to Ellen Hedley’s 862.
Speaking to SCAN after the results were announced, Scott said she “really surprised” but also “really pleased”. Her main priorities in office will be mental health and counselling, LUSU Gives and rent prices.
“I want to do some more mental health awareness campaigns… because of the problems with the counselling service… [I’d] try and lobby the University to give more funding to counselling. I know they’ve employed two new councillors but I don’t think that’s enough.”
“I know the whole team of FTOs have mentioned rent in their manifesto’s so we’ll work on that. As an individual I haven’t got the capacity to change it but I’ll definitely work with everyone to try and reduce the rent rates on campus or at least freeze them.”
Scott also says she want to “consult more with students. I know they say that every year but I really, really do.” Discussing how she will prepare for her new role, Scott says “I’m going to have a list of things I want to do each term and try and fulfil each of them.”
Reflecting on the success of her campaign, Scott said “I chalked all over campus… a few people I spoke to said ‘I’ve seen your chalk’ so maybe that played a part! I [also] thought my hust encouraged people to vote for me as I put a lot of personal experience into it and a lot of emotion.”
There are a number of people Scott wished to thank her parents and also Alex Alawode who produced a number of videos for her campaign and everyone in her campaign team. “They’ve all been really supportive, I can’t thank them enough.”
Discussing the other FTO’s who have been elected Scott says “they are all lovely people. I can’t think of anyone I wouldn’t like to work with, so I look forward to working with them.”
