In the most recent league tables revealed by The Times Lancaster University has ranked within the top 100 universities across the globe for Social Sciences.
The subject was ranked 84th in The Times World Subject Rankings 2015/16 when the table was released in the first week of November. Lancaster was one of only 17 universities from the United Kingdom who managed to make it into the top 100 for their social sciences studies.
Social science at Lancaster covers a wide range of disciplines including Social Work, Educational Research, Law, Sociology, International Relations, Politics, Business, Economics, Psychology, Geography, Statistics and Mathematical Methods in social sciences.
The tables are created by the judging of the world class institutions dependent on their four core missions – teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.
According to the Times Higher Education website, Lancaster University scored highest on International Outlook and Citations and overall scored 56.3 out of 100. Scoring similarly were Universities from all over the globe including the University of Tokyo, Japan who beat Lancaster by 0.1 points and the University of New South Wales, Australia which lost to Lancaster by only 0.2 points.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States of America topped the table with a whopping score of 95.1 out of 100, moving up from second place in their rankings from last year and pushing Stanford University off of the top spot. The top ranking UK university was the University of Oxford who came 4th with a score of 91.2 out of 100.
This result comes after many other positive ones for the university. Lancaster University came 9th in The Complete University Guide league table for 2016 and topped the table for universities in the North West. Lancaster was also named ‘best value for money university in England’ by the Telegraph and ranked 11th in the Times Higher ‘table of tables’ which combines three of the biggest UK league tables.
Earlier on in the year when these rankings were released Vice-Chancellor Professor Mark E. Smith said: “The reputation of Lancaster is reflected by high rankings year-on-year in each of the UK’s major university league tables and the number of students applying to study here has soared with the increase in numbers this year well above the national average.”
