The Ballet Society offers a unique opportunity to classical dance lovers and any budding or current ballerinas, while breaking the gender stereotypes of ballet.
The LU Ballet Society is one of the many societies with its main aim being “to get everyone loving ballet” as said by Lauren, one of the LU ballet treasurers. Lauren is in charge of payments which go towards bringing in professional dance teachers to give LUBS members the best experience in the classes.
LUBS welcomes complete beginners to immediate dancers, as they cater for both levels of experience. These classes take place in the LFT every Tuesday, with beginners classes @ 6-6:50pm and advanced classes @ 6:55-7:45pm. Each class costs £3 for members and £4 for non-members but if you decide to go to both sessions, it’s only £5.
The society also offers fitness sessions on Fridays, 8-10pm.
Anne, the LUBS social executive, emphasises that “ballet should be for everyone” as the purpose behind the ballet classes is to make sure people “go back home happy that they did their best”.
The beginner classes go over all the basics: warm-ups, bar work, pirouettes, leaps, jumps etc. While the advanced classes are more fast paced with more choreographed moves and sequences.
That’s not to say that beginners can’t also give choreography a try. Choreography sessions run by their two choreography officers which is open to all level of dancers.
LUBS put on a range of socials such as sip and paint, film nights or themed nights out.
On 5th November, they will be joining LUDanS for a 12-hour danceathon to raise money for SEED and Mind at 4pm in the Minor Hall.
All classes, socials, and performances organised by LUBS and more information on the society can be found here.
