Live Review: Kitty, Daisy & Lewis

Loading

I was instantly a massive fan of Kitty, Daisy & Lewis when I heard their album Smoking in Heaven. If you’ve not heard of them, they’re a ridiculously musically talented sibling trio, who replicate an absolute abundance of older music styles, taking inspiration from R&B, swing, and blues, to name a few. When I say ‘ridiculously talented’, I mean it. It seems the brother and sisters can play anything and everything, from the accordion to the harmonica, with ease and stylish grace.

Smoking in Heaven was the soundtrack to my summer. It was key to my daily getting up and out routine, complete with some very ambitious dancing around my house and appalling imitations of deep and soulful vocals – and on hearing that Kitty, Daisy & Lewis were playing in Lancaster on November 28th, I was more excited than I have ever been about a gig. It wasn’t until support act The Sharp Tongues (who unfortunately, I found to be rather lacklustre and mundane), that I considered the devastating idea – what if when the trio took to the stage, I was going to be disappointed?

But thank goodness, I wasn’t. I can honestly say it was one of the best gigs of my life. The vocals from the sibling trio were graceful and flawless, the skills on the plethora of instruments they brought out were striking, and the energy on stage was at the optimum level. They looked fantastic.

Kitty Durham’s soulful vocals were studio-perfect, and her skills on the harmonica are without contest. She’s also more beautiful than I imagined possible – it’s unfair really, the genes these kids have inherited! Daisy Durham surprised me – although at the beginning she seemed shadowed by her younger sister, her energy on stage was amazing, and her unanticipated beatboxing – yes, she beatboxed! – thrilled the dancing audience. While dancing, the audience were of course falling in love with the absolutely stunning Lewis Durham. I genuinely didn’t expect him to be so handsome, and so talented on the guitar, with the smoothest vocals in the room. Considering the gorgeous Ingrid Durham – aka, Mummy Durham – who was absolutely rocking her double bass at the side of the stage, it’s not surprising really that Kitty, Daisy & Lewis have inherited such first-rate DNA.

The Durhams have it all – style, talent, creativity, and desirability. If you get the opportunity, go and see them, and be prepared to fall in love. I am currently constructing a foolproof plan that will make Lewis Durham beg me to be his wife. Emma Durham sounds pretty good to me…
