The Met Gala is one of the most anticipated fashion events of the year, and this year was no exception with many celebrity looks making the hot list. The annual event took place on the 7th May 2018 in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, and entailed many celebrities astounding a world of spectators with extravagant fashion ideas, as created by some of the most well-known designers. Since then, it has been swirling around the world of social media creating opinions surrounding the hits and misses of the evening. This year’s theme of ‘Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic imagination’ involved celebs being dressed to the nines in religious inspired outfits and left us dazzled with the creativity and artistic looks produced. Let’s take a look at some of the most glamorous gowns of the evening!
The top outfit of the night has to be the Versace gown as worn by Blake Lively. This exquisite crimson dress captured the essence of the theme of ‘heavenly bodies’ perfectly with a crown of jewels being worn as a representation of the Virgin Mary. This striking creation involved two million jewels by Lorraine Schwartz and so is a perfect example of the majestic designs that are seen annually at the Met Gala. It is almost certain that this gown is something even Serena Van Der Woodsen herself would approve of. With this said, it is no surprise that it is a topic on everyone’s minds! Lively’s dress is one I have repeatedly seen on social media, all of which advocate it as being one of the finest of evening. As it is said, it’s all about the accessories, and Lively’s dress most certainly involved some of the sweetest attentions to detail. Her diamond encrusted clutch bag paid tribute to her family, through containing the initials of her husband, Ryan Reynolds and their two children. These small additions are what make this outfit even more special and creative. Her makeup for the evening was a subtle red eye shadow to match the regal gown perfectly. We should also appreciate the effort she put into this event, having to be transported in a bus to the red carpet itself- very impressive! Blake Lively; you did us proud!
Another top outfit of the evening is the Vera Wang design as worn by Ariana Grande. Grande appeared on the red carpet in an elegant gown that re-created “The Last Judgement” painting by Michelangelo which is displayed on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. The Sistine Chapel is located within the Vatican City; the heart of Roman Catholicism, and hence, this attire is entirely representative of the theme of the Met Gala this year. Having been to the Vatican City myself, I can definitely say that this gown captured the heart of this art-work perfectly. With all this said, it is clear to see that Grande’s Met Ball look was incredibly classy and regal; and so extremely appropriate. The Vera Wang outfit was completed by a delightful bow as worn on Ariana’s head, with her signature hair style of a straight pony tail accompanying it. Her makeup for the evening was a perfect simple winged eyeliner- elegant and chic. It is no surprise that Grande’s outfit is one of the best of the evening.
The final fashion review of the Met Gala has to be the Jeremy Scott gown as worn by Cardi B, which came out as the crème de la crème of the evening. Having revealed her pregnancy last month on Saturday Night Live after weeks of speculated rumours, Cardi’s outfit was one of the most anticipated of the evening, with the media eagerly awaiting another glimpse of her baby bump. From her recent media surge, it was no surprise that her look at the Met Gala was bound to make the tabloids. To the event, Cardi wore a cream gown with diamond and pearl attachments; capturing the theme of Catholicism faultlessly, with the headpiece of jewellery being a perfect example the Virgin Mary also. For this reason, this elegant gown was one of the most widely posted on social media following the event, and it is clear to see why- Cardi, you certainly delivered. When it comes to Cardi B, what makes her so unique in the field of celebrity news is her humour filled personality. There’s no denying that she looked radiant, and her dress was impeccable, however, the nature of her personality is what draws our attention to her the most. When watching interviews with Cardi at the Met Gala, it is evident to see that she leaves everyone belly-laughing with her unique catch phrases and whimsical one liners. Her makeup look for the evening; a simple smoky eye with a red lipstick complemented the gown flawlessly and left us all hungry for more. During the evening, Cardi reportedly revealed that she will be expecting a baby girl; which left the tabloids babbling with even more excitement for the baby’s arrival this year. To sum up the outfit in the words of Cardi herself, “Okurrrr!”. Well done Cardi!
It’s hardly shocking that the Met Gala is a hot topic in the field of fashion and beauty this month, and I imagine that it will continue to whirl around the media; with the evening being pinned as one of the most influential fashion events of the year.
