York comfortable in six-wicket win

York Cricket Seconds 119-4; Lancaster Cricket Seconds 118; York Win by Six Wickets.
York’s Cricket team cruised to a six wicket victory over Lancaster 2nds during the first match of the 2013 Roses courtesy of a fine century from opener Mark Askham.
Lancaster skipper George Potter lost the toss and his team were put into bat by York, despite the pristine pitch and sunny conditions. Lancaster made a fantastic start with Johnny Millward being aggressive from the off and taking the fight to the York bowlers. Potter struggled to find the fence himself but he was the perfect foil for the power of Millward until he was dismissed for just nine.
Soon after Millward had his half century, he too was back in the pavilion following an electric spell of bowling from man of the match Thomas Waghorn. Despite Helliwell (23) and Ingham (34) producing entertaining cameos, the red rose could not hold a stable partnership together like the first and managed a below par 208 all out.
York started slowly as the Lancaster fast bowlers built up pressure, but soon Askham found his rhythm with a wonderful display of front foot driving. Lancaster struggled to find a breakthrough and Askham looked at ease dispatching the occasional bad deliveries.
Spin proved to be fruitful for Lancaster as Ingham and Helliwell between them nullified the York top order as they dismissed Bierley (24) Robinrosa (25) and Moffat (4). But once again a top class cricketing spell from Thomas Waghorn took the game away from Lancaster as he slogged his way to an impressive 35 before being caught.
His dismissal mattered little since the game had been won and it was only fitting that Askham drove the ball past the boundary to complete an unbeaten 103 and round off a vital roses win.
