York win in nail-biting Ultimate Frisbee Open

Ultimate Frisbee across the weekend has been a generally tense affair; Lancaster had swept five points in five games going in to the final event, whilst York had won four points in one game. Depending on which side you were on, this meant that either team could be declared the ultimate Ultimate Frisbee club of Roses, depending on who won. For those unfamiliar with the Roses-brand of Ultimate Frisbee (it’s a sport where the length of the game seems largely dependent on how the teams are feeling on the day) today’s winners would be the first to reach a 11 points, and be two points clear of the other team.

The nature of the sport made the game was somewhat difficult to follow; teams switch ends after each point is scored in attempt to balance out wind-base advantages, though the weather-related challenges of this game were perhaps found more in the intense early afternoon heat that the athletes were subjected to.

Lancaster opened the scoring after five minutes, however York equalised shortly after. This saw the visitors go on a bit of scoring rampage, taking them to a 4-1 lead, but the home team were able to level the scoring on the half hour mark. A pattern was beginning to emerge; York were the much stronger side for the following 15 minutes, scoring another three without reply taking the score the 7-4. This was once again followed by a noble Lancaster fightback, with the home side coming back to equalise yet again. The score line stood at 7-7, with just four points left to play for. York did it again, scoring another three ahead of Lancaster, putting them in touching distance of the win with a score of 10-7. As they had done before Lancaster began their comeback, bringing the game to a nail-biting climax with a score of 10-9. Unfortunately for the home team, their comeback was in vain. The visitors sealed the win with a neat piece of play down the right wing to take the final score to 11-9, meaning York were deemed the ultimate Ultimate Frisbee-ers.
